Getting better nights of rest is a goal for many who take CBD. But, when exactly should you take it when trying to catch those extra Z’s? I’ve ventured out on a journey to find the answer:
Take CBD Oil 30 mins. before heading to bed. CBD Gummies or Capsules should be taken 1 – 2 hrs. before bed; Due to the slower onset of digested CBD. This allows time for the CBD “activate” within your body.
How Are You Taking It?
One of the biggest factors into deciding when to take you CBD is the delivery method.
CBD Gummies & Capsules are slower to kick in, with longer-lasting effects; due to digestion. A great choice for those who struggle with staying asleep. So, we recommend taking them 1 – 2 hrs. before heading to bed.
Sublingual (CBD Oil) brings faster, more effective absorption while effects wear off quicker! Taking this into consideration, try taking it 30 mins. or so before bed to account for the quicker absorption.
Inhaled CBD is quickest & highest absorption rate, but wears off in 1 -2 hrs. Although this wouldn’t be our first choice for getting better rest, keep in mind you may want to take a puff or two just before heading to bed. As effects are near-instant.
Already Taking Medication?
We always invite you to consult your physician. Especially if you are attempting to reduce the use of these traditional sleep aids alongside taking CBD. As controlled tapering can be a very important step in the process.
We also always recommend starting lower with dosing & titrating up if you are not seeing any results after some time. While you’re finding your CBD ‘sweet spot’ you should also be monitoring changes pertaining to the condition you are taking said medication for.
Lastly, spacing out when you take CBD & traditional medications can be an easy way to separate the effects of both a bit more & ensure that they are absorbed at different times.
Will I Feel Groggy Upon Waking?
Although traditional sleep aids or solutions might make you groggy or tired when you wake up; CBD doesn’t.
I wrote up an entire article on this topic here, but in the meantime just know that CBD works much differently than typical sleep aids. Instead of ‘forcing’ your body to go to sleep and/or feel tired, CBD works with your body to restore its natural Circadian AKA Sleep/Wake pattern.
The Endocannabinoid System has a direct relation to both sleep & feelings of calmness/relaxation. So, expect the effects to be much less harsh on your body & to actually feel well-rested when you wake up. Because that’s what the entire goal of sleeping is!
What CBD Is Does
So, if it isn’t ‘forcing’ you to feel sleepy then how does it help?
All About That REM
Studies have shown that CBD helps to deepen the REM cycles you have throughout your night of sleep. REM sleep is the stage of sleep where we dream & it’s also the most important, restorative stage. Have you noticed you don’t tend to dream alongside your sleep issues? Your REM is lacking….
But, that’s okay. Because you’re not alone; in fact about 70 million Americans have chronic sleep issues. So, this is a prevalent problem. One that directly affects performance, mood, & even life expectancy.
Staying Asleep Longer
Taking CBD also has been shown to reduce the amount of times you wake throughout the night. A 2018 Survey by Project CBD showed that on average the times one wakes in a night was reduced from 4.3 to 1.4, after taking CBD. Another important metric, as many people struggle to get back to sleep after they’ve woken up!
Getting To Sleep Quicker
Speaking about being up; the same 2018 survey revealed that participants reduced their time to get to sleep from an average of 62 mins. (without CBD) to 20 mins. (with CBD). Imagine spending only twenty minutes contemplating your life’s entire purpose versus a whole hour.
Am I Going to Oversleep?
The next big worry for many people is the opposite problem; oversleeping! A valid concern as being late for work, a doctors appointment, or otherwise is not ideal.
So, as we said CBD works quite differently than traditional ways of getting better rest. Since it is not forcefully inducing a state of sleep, it means that you will not be ‘dead’ asleep!
We can’t promise you won’t hit snooze & still end up being late. But, it CBD won’t be keeping you locked into the sheets!
